COMPASSION AS COMPETENCE: ETHICAL CARE AND PROFESSIONALISM IN THE WORKPLACE

Because caring well is a skill set—and it can be taught.

The fitness and wellness industry knows how to build strength, endurance, and resilience.

But when it comes to working with transgender and gender diverse people, many professionals were never given the tools to do so with confidence, clarity, and care.

This training bridges that gap.

Who We Are

Hi, I’m Alex Vaughan (they/them), and I am a recovery-centered leader with over 25 years in the fitness, health, and wellness industry. A former college athlete at The Ohio State University, a longtime N.A.S.M. Certified Personal Trainer and A.C.E. Group Fitness Instructor (including the instructor’s instructor), my work in the fitness industry aims beyond surface level of just getting a “good workout”. My focus is anchored through the 9 spheres of human wellness through something we all have: a human heart. Fitness has always been one of the pathways through my recovery and my life, including my transition as a transgender and nonbinary human.

I spent a long time thinking that being "competent" meant never messing up, keeping the peace, being nice, and going along with whatever was being said. This backfired and hardened my heart to the world. It took a lot of unlearning (that I still do) to realize that one of my greatest strengths as a transgender person is actually my capacity for compassion. Facing discrimination, harassment, and rejection for being honest about who I am, I had to learn how to get more comfortable losing relationships with people who feel entitled to disrespect me simply because I am transgender. I wasn’t lost; I was a mirror.

I developed the Compassion as Competence training because I want to support our community through positive rupture, rest, and repair. Burnout is not a cute look. I believe that radical kindness—toward ourselves and others—is the ultimate "life hack" for professional success and personal peace. Power goes beyond physical and must include emotional and psychological agility. (Reference: Beyond Inclusion, Beyond Empowerment, by Dr. Leticia Nieto)

When I’m not facilitating, you can find me coaching one-on-one and teaching strength classes and Dance Magic, holding space for the beautiful minds, bodies, spirits, and shadows that bring momentum to the life we all dream.

I’m here to help teams find and build backbone, legs and heart…remembering that we’re all on the side of humanity.

What Is Compassion as Competence?

Compassion is often misunderstood as something soft, optional, or instinctual.

It’s not.

Compassion is a practiced, embodied competency—one that requires:

  • Awareness

  • Education

  • Accountability

  • Skill in action

In this training, we move compassion out of intention and into implementation.

Why This Training Matters.

For many transgender and gender diverse individuals, entering a gym or wellness space means navigating:

  • Misgendering and invisibility

  • Fear of being watched, judged, or corrected

  • Environments that don’t account for their bodies or experiences

  • A nervous system shaped by exclusion, not safety

Without the right training, even well-meaning professionals can unintentionally reinforce harm.

With the right training, you become part of someone’s return to their body.

What Makes This Different.

This is not a checkbox training.

This is movement & skill-building for real-world interactions.

You’ll leave with:

  • Language you can actually use

  • Tools you can apply immediately

  • Skills that lay deep foundation for transformational shifts

  • A deeper understanding of the impact you have as a professional.

Led by lived experience, this work is direct, grounded, and rooted in recovery wellness, trauma awareness, and human dignity.

What You’ll Learn.

Foundations of Gender Diverse identities

Build a clear, usable understanding of gender identity, expression, and language—without overwhelm or shame.

Who This Is For?

Professionals at every level!

  • Personal trainers, massage therapists, and coaches

  • ERGs

  • CEOs, Business owners, Managers

  • Yoga, Pilates, and group fitness instructors

  • Wellness providers, bodyworkers, Reiki practitioners, acupuncturists, etc.

If you work with and on moving human bodies, this work is for you.

The Outcome

When compassion becomes competence:

Your staff:

  • Communicate with confidence and connection instead of fear and perfectionist language

  • Navigate mistakes with honesty, dignity & integrity

  • Improve employee contentment and productivity

  • Expand empathy for varied lived experiences

  • Build trust with clients who are used to guarding themselves

Your space:

  • Feels safer without needing to say it

  • Becomes known for care, not just performance

  • Supports people in showing up fully—not defensively

This Work Is an open Invitation.

Not to be perfect.

But to be responsible for the impact you have.

To understand that every cue, every interaction, every assumption—lands somewhere in someone’s body.

And to choose, intentionally, to make that impact one of respect, safety, and possibility.

Embodied Learning Through Movement!

This isn’t just theory.

Through guided movement experiences and interactive slide presentation facilitation, your team will:

  • Explore power, safety, and awareness in their own bodies

  • Build empathy that lives beyond language

  • Understand how the environment impacts embodiment
