Recovery In Motion

Recovery Coaching Basics. Embodied.

A professional training experience blending CCAR Recovery Coach Basics with movement, reflection, and Dance Magic. Recovery is more than stopping a behavior. It is learning how to reconnect—with ourselves, our bodies, our communities, our values, and the possibility that life can feel different. Recovery In Motion brings foundational recovery coaching skills out of the textbook and into the body.

Facilitated by Alex Vaughan, CPFS, RCP, RCPF, this experiential professional training combines the principles and skills of CCAR Recovery Coach Basics with Alex’s Dance Magic movement practice to explore recovery as something we don’t simply talk about—we practice it.

Participants learn practical recovery coaching skills while experiencing how movement, music, connection, compassion, and nervous-system awareness can support change.

Because recovery doesn’t happen standing still. Recovery In Motion teaches professionals how to meet people there—with curiosity instead of judgment, partnership instead of prescription, and respect for the wisdom people already carry about their own lives.

What You’ll Learn:

Through Recovery In Motion, participants explore foundational recovery coaching concepts including:

  • What recovery coaching is—and what it is not

  • The role and responsibilities of a recovery coach

  • Recovery capital and identifying strengths and resources

  • Multiple pathways of recovery

  • Person-centered and strengths-based coaching

  • Supporting autonomy and self-determination

  • Effective listening and powerful questions

  • Building collaborative recovery relationships

  • Ethics, boundaries, and appropriate scope of practice

  • Stigma, language, identity, and belonging

  • Supporting people without trying to rescue, fix, or prescribe

  • Recognizing the role of community in sustainable recovery

These concepts are integrated throughout the training with discussion, experiential learning, reflection, music, and accessible movement.

The Dance Magic Experience

Dance Magic has been developed through decades of Alex Vaughan’s work in fitness, coaching, recovery, peer support, and embodied wellness.

Participants are invited to experience movement as a tool for:

  1. Connection
Moving alongside other people can decrease isolation and remind us that recovery does not have to happen alone.

  2. Self-expression
Movement creates opportunities to explore parts of ourselves that may not always have words.

  3. Nervous-system awareness
Participants practice noticing activation, regulation, energy, boundaries, and choice within their bodies.

  4. Play
Recovery can involve serious work. It also needs room for curiosity, laughter, creativity, and joy.

  5. Resilience
Dance gives us opportunities to lose the beat, find it again, adapt, improvise, and keep moving.

There are no perfect steps. There are simply opportunities to notice, choose, experiment, and begin again. That sounds a lot like recovery.

Who Is Recovery In Motion For?

Recovery In Motion is designed for humans who work with humans. Especially:

  1. Fitness & Movement Professionals
Personal trainers, group fitness instructors, yoga teachers, dance instructors, recreation professionals, coaches, and wellness practitioners.

  2. Behavioral Health & Recovery Professionals
Recovery coaches, peer support specialists, treatment professionals, community health workers, case managers, behavioral health staff, and recovery-community organizations.

  3. Healthcare & Wellness Professionals

  4. Community & Human-Service Professionals
Educators, nonprofit staff, LGBTQ+ organizations, youth-serving professionals, community leaders, and anyone whose work brings them into relationship with people navigating change.

You do not need to work in addiction treatment to benefit from recovery coaching skills.

If your work involves supporting human beings through change, these skills belong in your professional toolkit.

Why Recovery Coaching Belongs in Wellness Spaces

Fitness, healthcare, behavioral health, and wellness professionals often encounter people navigating substance use, mental health challenges, grief, identity transitions, trauma, major life changes, and other forms of recovery. Yet many professionals have never been taught what to say. So we avoid the conversation. We try to solve it. We accidentally shame someone. Or we step outside our professional role because we genuinely want to help. Recovery coaching gives professionals another option. You can learn how to walk beside someone without needing to become their therapist, sponsor, clinician, or rescuer. Recovery In Motion builds the communication skills, boundaries, awareness, and confidence to create spaces where recovery can be supported without judgment.

A Different Kind of Professional Training

You can learn about recovery from a slide deck. Recovery In Motion asks you to experience some of it. Participants will learn, discuss, reflect, connect, move, laugh, practice, and apply. You may leave understanding recovery differently. You may also leave understanding your own relationship with change differently. That is intentional.

Professional competence matters. So does human connection.
